Being located in the application center of the Fraunhofer Institute of Laser Technology (ILT) in Aachen, Germany, provides us with an excellent access to a proven R&D network. Furthermore, LUNOVU is a member of the collaborative cluster "Direct Photonic Production" (DPP) at the University of Aachen (RWTH). Together with our co-operation partners this allows us to be right at the interface between R&D and industry. We bring innovative processes into the market!

Laser Technology

 

A laser is a unique tool. After Albert Einstein had described its theoretical principle in 1916, it took almost half a decade until the first working laser was produced in 1960.

Since then, laser light in its multiple variations has conquered numerous application areas. In many cases, the laser has enabled new technologies and products. Using a laser means utilizing light as a highly effective tool. Different from conventional light sources, laser light usually is very brilliant, monochromatic and directed. Most important - it can be very intense while it is well controllable. These properties allow using laser light for material processing purposes.

Almost everything is possible

Laser light can cut and weld metals in an extremely well controlled manner, or it drills holes precisely. Using a laser, material can be ablated or generated. Microscopic structures can be produced. The range of materials that can be processed is almost unlimited - it includes steel, non-ferrous metals, ceramics, plastics, glass, diamond, semiconductors, compound materials and many others.

As laser light sources and related optical components are permanently improved, novel application areas are continuously generated. At the same time, lasers become more efficient and reliable while costs decrease. As a consequence, laser technology can move into application areas which have been dominated by conventional technologies so far.

LUNOVU - Integrated Laser Solutions

LUNOVU designs and builds complex laser systems, providing integrated solutions for customers in R&D and industry, in applications such as additive manufacturing, laser cladding or micro processing. Our unique products are based on high performance hardware, proprietary control software and application specific process know-how.

LUNOVU laser systems are based on a modular concept. The product portfolio covers 2 to 5 axes cartesian setups in various sizes. Additionally, systems based on articulated robots are available. By merging all critical system components, such as mechanics, electronics, controls, automation and process,  a truly integrated system is created which offers significant added value to our customers.

LUNOVU laser machines use latest technology. Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) systems for laser cladding, (also referred to as DED - Direct Energy Deposition or DMD - Direct Metal Deposition) for example, are equipped with a unique sensor technology that scans and digitizes parts surfaces, and automatically calculates and executes welding paths.

Recently, the EHLA process (extreme high speed laser cladding) which was developed by Fraunhofer ILT gained a lot of interest due to its capability to coat parts with unsurpassed velocity and efficiency.

MR-1: Micro Material Processing Laser System

The LUNOVU MR-1 is a laser micro material processing system that covers a broad range of applications and processes. This includes micro structuring through ablation, drilling and cutting of various materials.

These processes are applied in eletronics and optoelectonics, thin film technologies, medical engineering sensor technology or in general micro system technology.

The materials to be processed are almost unlimited. Metals like steel, copper or aluminum, but also glass, ceramics, metal oxides and organic materials are processed in LUNOVU systems.

LUNOVU MR-1: Integrated Solution for Micro Processing

Key features of our laser micro processing equipment are highest precision and speed. A robust and vibration free frame is used, usually made of massive granite. Precise and fast axes - both linear and rotary - are employed to perform exact and reproducible 3D processes.  The working chamber does not only meet the application requirements, but also reveals an ergonomic design and good accessibility. 

Latest technologies in micro processing are already integrated into LUNOVU systems today. As an example, ultra short pulse technology allows processing of very small structures with minimum thermal impact. LUNOVU continuously looks for novel technologies, qualifies them and benefits from a unique R&D network, which provides access to latest developments in laser technology.
